The team of Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) probing the speedboat capsizing incident will recreate the scene of the accident where it occurred. On October 24, a group of around 25 people was sailing onboard a speedboat from the Gateway of India to the Shivaji Memorial construction site. One died while remaining 24 people were rescued after the speedboat hit a rock on the way.

After the accident, the MMB was ordered to conduct a probe into the same along with the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) also conducting a probe saying that it handled sailing off the Gateway of India.

After an initial inspection and probe by MMB, it is assumed that the boat had hit a rock and a bruise was seen below the boat that allowed water to seep in. An MMB official said, "In our initial probe, it is assumed that when the boat was passing the water level in the sea was falling, and during the incident, the water level was only around 1.5 metres. Low tide was expected in the next 30 minutes before the boat met with the accident. This is one of the reasons behind the boat hitting the rocks."

"In our probe that is ongoing now we will try to recreate the whole accident scenario to ascertain what happened, and whether the route followed by the boat was safe along with it also ascertain why did the other three boats that followed the same route did not meet the same fate," the official said.

The Mbpt that issues sailing permissions off Gateway of India had said that the boat that met with the accident did not have any sailing permission from it. And it will ask the boat operator to show the same. It is also said that the boat was overloaded, and the actual capacity was only 20 against the rescued 24.

The MMB conducting the probe has also sent a set of questionnaires to the private boat operator that will have to be answered by the boat operator in writing. "We have asked for each and every detail into the accident, and the private operator is expected to reply to the same in writing," an MMB official said.
