Besides being in urgent need of some attention, it seems the Marathi Language department needs needs some rescuing too. In a gross violation of safety measures, the Maharashtra government's official language department works out of a refuge area on the 8th floor of the New Administrative building.

How did matter come to light?
The revelation comes in the light of work happening at Mantralaya, which suffered extensive damage due to a massive fire in June 2012, which claimed three lives and left many injured. While the renovation of the iconic structure is continuing, the government has stated that it is taking all possible steps to ensure safety of the premises.

Has it raised concerns?
Not long ago dna had reported the poor state of affairs in the department and how it almost didn't have any dedicated person. A letter written by the secretary of the department states that a new space is wanted on a "war footing" because it is currently operating out of a refuge area on the eighth floor.

How is the dept functioning?
The letter that was written over two months ago also seeks bigger space for the department and a chamber for the secretary. The letter further goes to state that the department is a big put off to littérateurs when they visit the department as it does not even stock any books about the language.

What do officials say?
Shrikant Deshpande, secretary of the department who had written the letter, was not available as his office stated he was on leave. Sumit Mullick, chief protocol officer to whom the letter was addressed, did not respond to calls or SMSes sent to him. There was no response to calls or SMSes to Chief Secretary Swadheen Kshatriya and minister of the Marathi language department Vinod Tawde.
