Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority to redevelop 2,000 slum hutments

Now, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) will also redevelop 2,000 slum hutments based within the limits of Motilal Nagar, and after the redevelopment, it is set to get an additional of 2,500 homes, which it will sell via lottery to common people.

This figure is apart from the 40,000 homes that the housing authority is expected to receive after it rehabilitates existing 3,700 residents of Motilal Nagar.

According to a senior official from Mhada, there are close to 2,000 hutments spread across the 142 acres of Motilala Nagar, located in Goregaon. These hutments will also be redeveloped by Mhada. The rehabilitation of the slum dwellers will be carried out by Mhada under the Development Control Rules 33 (10) meant for slum redevelopment. "Post this redevelopment and rehabilitation of 2,000 slum dwellers, Mhada will receive close to 2,500 additional homes, this homes will be sold to the common people via lottery," said the official.

Mhada has started the survey process of Motilal Nagar, which it is aiming to redevelop under Development Control Rules 33 (5), meant for redevelopment of Mhada layout.

Mumbai Board Chief Officer of Mhada, B Radhakrishnan, when asked said, "We will rehabilitate all eligible citizens, but decision regarding 33(10) or other provisions of DCPR will be taken after completion of survey and finalising beneficiaries."

While there's a group that wants Mhada to go ahead with the redevelopment there are some group that aims for self redevelopment, However, Mhada at present has put an end to all speculations of self redevelopment and wants to redevelop the entire stretch on its own.

The main reason for Mhada to show so much interest in Motilal Nagar is because it is a huge chunk of land, that will give the land strapped Mhada thousands of homes, which it can sell via lottery. The number of homes that Mhada has been offering in the lottery has been dwindling in recent times and if they manage to redevelop Motilal Nagar and get the homes, a major concern for Mhada will be solved.
