The state home department on Wednesday held back-to-back meetings with senior police and intelligence officials in the wake of the recent spurt in law and order incidents, particularly after an improvised explosive device exploded in a parcel at a courier firm’s office in Ahmednagar on Tuesday.

The government, unwilling to risk being seen ineffectual in the run-up to the assembly polls next year, is considering streamlining its strategy in dealing with a terror-related activities. With this in mind, Bangladesh-based terror group Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) was recently placed under the Anti Terrorism Squad’s radar. Minister of state for home Deepak Kesarkar said all security and intelligence agencies are working to arrest the culprits behind Ahmednagar explosion. “The agencies will work hard to curb efforts to radicalise youths in the state,” he said, while a state home department officer told DNA, “The ATS will keep close watch on ABT’s moves, and we will enhance our intelligence capabilities.”

Activities of Pakistan-based terror groups such as Harakatul Mujahideen, Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba; operations of SIMI and Indian Mujahideen; and online radicalisation by ISIS were also talked about at length during Wednesday’s meet.

The National Security Guard’s former Director General RD Tyagi said security agencies will have to come up with a sound strategy to tackle youths being radicalised “all over”. While Mumbai is an obvious target, he said, attacks can take place anywhere in the state. Security expert Shirish Inamdar echoed Tyagi and said religious radicalisation was taking place all over India including Maharashtra.
