Maharashtra government will watch Agnes of God to ascertain if it's objectionable: Eknath Khadse

Minister for minority affairs Eknath Khadse on Monday said the play Agnes of God would be recorded and the state government would go through it to check if there's anything objectionable.

Christian groups have opposed the play and sought a ban on it on the ground that it belittles their religion. Kaizaad Kotwal of Poor Box Productions, which is staging the play, and Joseph Daiz, the head of the Catholic Secular Forum (CSF), met Khadse and presented their sides.

Khadse, after discussing the issue with them, made it clear that as the Censor Board has already given a certification to the play, the state cannot impose a ban randomly. He assured Christian bodies' representatives that the government would record the play to ascertain if there was anything objectionable.

After Daiz made his points about how the play was "anti-Catholic", Khadse told him that if the CSF wants the play banned, it should approach either the Censor Board or the high court. He added that he would not comment on the play, but would discuss it with both sides after watching it.
