Taking a serious note of the deteriorating condition of the forests in Maharashtra, state government, for the first time, has decided to set up forest academy and bamboo research and training centre. The new training centre will help make forest officials and new recruits more aware about how to conserve the forest's flora and fauna and increase the bamboo plantations.

Cabinet minister Sudhir Mungantiwar has finally implemented his pet project in the state on which he had been working on for the past several years.

The state on Thursday decided that both bamboo research and training centre and forest academy will be set up in Chandrapur. The current forest training institute there will be upgraded to the academy and rechristened as Chandrapur Forest Academy of Administration, Development and Management.

The government has also decided that the Burud community, which earns its livelihood by making bamboo articles in the forest, will be now given at least 1,500 bamboos every year per family to ensure they make different articles and sustain themselves.

Earlier, only 7,900 community members used to get this benefit as the state government had stopped the registration of new members. With Thursday's decision by the cabinet, all community members will be able to get free bamboos through the scheme. The state government has also waived off the royalty on the bamboo plantation and transportation, except for two types of bamboos.

About the forest academy
According to the information given by the department, the academy will train forest officers about wildlife management and forest products. The academy will get 100% grant from the state. The department will create nine new posts for the academy, with four being filled by recruiting independent experts.
The academy will provide technical training, in-service training, basic training and also special training for the promotions and refresher courses, subjects will be added from time to time. Moreover, workers from NGOs, administrative staff and higher rank officers of the forest department, as well as the public will be given training.

Bamboo Research Training Centre
The state has decided to adopt a new bamboo policy to increase the plantation and the yield. It also aims at increasing the production of bamboo articles. Hence, professional skills will be imparted through directorate general of employment and training.
The new centre, which will run the skilled courses approved by central government to give self-employment, will give training on bamboo processing, secondary bamboo training, bamboo handicraft and furniture.
