The government has decided to re-possess the land owned by 5 Mumbai-based trusts after their failure to develop them under the slum rehabilitation scheme.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Monday that the government will now develop the land on its own. The trust lands are spread over Goregaon, Malad, Bhandup, Kurla and Dahisar.

In a meeting with Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) officials, Fadnavis said 46% of Mumbai's population lived in slums, and, hence, resolution of issues related to slum-dwellers were essential.

A total of 117 slum rehabilitation projects by BMC and 96 by MHADA are pending. The SRA has a budget of Rs 1,800 crore. Of this, Rs 500 crore will be given to MHADA to create housing stock.

Fadnavis also called for a comprehensive re-development of Dharavi. To protect local industries in Dharavi, units will be given 400 sq ft instead of the previous 300 sq ft. The 100 sq ft can be sold on a ' no-profit, no-loss' basis.
