The state government has said it will look at some kind of cluster formation of engineering colleges in Maharashtra to solve the faculty crisis. The issue came up on Tuesday in the legislative council in a discussion on the needs of government engineering colleges.

Raising the issue, Nago Ganar, a member, demanded that initiatives be taken to have state-run engineering colleges in every district. As of now, only 10 districts have such colleges; they are needed in 26 districts.

The government said as there is vacancy in existing colleges and setting up new ones requires large amount of funds, it will not be feasible. However, Sunil Tatkare, member of the council, said a large number of vacancies were in private colleges, not in state-run ones.

Some members said vacancies existed also due to faculty not being there in rural colleges. In certain colleges, it was noted, there was a dearth of good teachers as they were not willing to come to the interiors.

"Hence, what we are trying to do is to look at cluster formation of such colleges, wherein teachers can go and teach from one college to another to solve the issue. We are trying to identify colleges from where teachers can do that," said educatio minister Vinod Tawade.
