The state government said in the legislative council that it will be installing CCTV cameras in RTOs across Maharashtra. The move has come amid complaints from members that citizens were being fleeced despite online and transparency measures being taken by the government, particularly at the Andheri, Wadala and Tardeo RTOs.

Advocate Anil Parab, member of the legislative council, first sought to know the action being taken against touts in RTOs. "It has come to the extent of touts occupying seats of officers. What penal action have you taken against them for fleecing citizens?" asked Parab.

"We will install CCTV cameras in all the offices to keep a watch on them and action will also be taken against officers," said Diwakar Raote, transport minister.

Some members sought that SMS facility be provided in cases where licence is returned by the postal department on not finding the person home, so that s/he can go to the respective RTO and collect it.

"The facility should be made available to people in slums as most postal and registry staff do not go into the bylanes. My own driver has not received his licence because of that," said Vidya Chavan, member of legislative council, who had raised the issue.

However, Raote said, "That's not possible because proof of residence is required."
