In view of the increasing population and rising crime rate, the state government has decided to add 60 new police stations in Maharashtra. Mumbai, however, will get no new station. Meanwhile, the department has already demarcated areas for 50 new stations. Also, 1,200 new posts have been created, which will be filled soon.

Pune (city) will get six new stations – Wakad created out of Hinjewadi and Sangvi, Sinhgad, Chandan Nagar created out of Yerwada, Alankar created out of Kothrud, Dighi, and Khadakwasla created out of Warje Malwadi. Pune (rural) will also get six more stations.

Thane (city) will get two new stations – Chittalsar Manpaada created out of Vartak Nagar, Kapurbawdi and Kasara, and Kadakpada created out of Mahatma Phule Chowk and Bazar Peth. Three stations will come up in Thane (rural).

Sources in the department said the previous government had passed the proposal to add more police stations in 2013 but the files were biting the dust till now. In June, a fresh notification was issued and finance department's approval was sought. Soon, the work of demarcating areas, constructing buildings and appointing personnel began.

As per a government resolution (GR), the new stations are being created keeping in mind the areas' population, rate of urbanisation and crimes. As per the norms, a new station can only be created out of station that has over 150 cases of heinous crimes registered in a year.

"Based on that data, the superintendent of police or an assistant commissioner sends reports to the director general of police, who forwards it to the government after verification. We have passed the proposal and have sent it to the finance department for approval," said another officer.

According to the department officials, each new station would require 20-30 personnel of various ranks, with a fixed expenditure of Rs40 lakh and a recurring expenditure of Rs10 lakh a month.
