Maharashtra Government to Centre: Consider dual pricing system for sugar

State Government has suggested Union Government to consider dual pricing for sugar with domestic consumers paying lesser price while sugar for commercial purpose can be charged higher.

On Moday, the state Government called a meeting of all stakeholders in sugar industry to discuss the issues faced by the industry.

Minister for cooperation Subhash Deshmukh informed that he had written a letter to Union Commerce ministry in this regard. He said that state has also requested Union Government to allow of sugar export as much as possible since sugar production is likely to increase in coming season taking in to account the predictionof a good monsoon.

Deshmukh informed that the sugar prices are falling down and dual pricing would not come in to force immediately. He informed that the Union Government has replied to his letter asking what could be the modalities for the dual pricing. Deshmukh informed that there is a difference between sugar consumed by domestic users and by those who use it for commercial purposes like preparing sweets and other items.

Deshmukh informed that state Government has suggested incentives for sugar factories who would go for producing ethanol and would use their vehicles by blending ethanol in to the petrol. He informed that incentives have also been suggested to manufacture raw sugar since it has export potential and prices of sugar in domestic market are going down.

DECISION TO BE TAKEN ON MONDAY

  • Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar is convening the meeting which is scheduled on this coming Monday. The meeting will be attended by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and State Marketing Minister Subhash Deshmukh. The stalwarts in the sugar industry and all other stakeholders have been invited for the meeting.
