Maharashtra government, in a bid to increase the investigative and forensic competence of the police personnel in order to keep in check the cybercrimes against women and children, will soon establish training and forensic laboratory in the city. The objective is to train nearly 5,400 police personnel from across the state on gathering digital evidence, conducting its analysis and completing the investigation in a time-bound manner.

The training and forensic laboratory will be established under the Cyber Crime Prevention against Women and Children (CCPWC) project, which was recently launched by the union home ministry. The Centre has developed a Cyber Crime Reporting Portal under the project for addressing the complaints of online harassment by women and children. Similar portal has been set up in the state by the Maharashtra Cyber Cell and about 10 of the total 300 cases registered are currently being investigated.

Brijesh Singh, Special Inspector General of Police, Maharashtra Cyber Cell, told DNA, "In this digital world, cyber crimes, including child pornography, cyber vilification, trolling, and romance scam are reported. The police personnel will be trained to effectively probe such cases in the proposed training and forensic laboratory." He informed that the lab will be set up with the help of the central funding.

Balsingh Rajpu, Superintendent of Police, Maharashtra Cyber Cell, said the proposed lab will help in improving the technology readiness to prevent cybercrimes against women and children. "Police will be trained with technical, legal and administrative issues confronted by them during investigation. They will be trained to make the case foolproof by using the digital evidence. The awareness campaign will be carried out for this as well as the legal and judicial fraternity," he added.
