The state government on Thursday has stayed the parking policy project which was announced by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The pilot project was to be launched in Ward A from February 1.

Issuing a stay order on Thursday, minister of state (MoS) for urban development Dr Ranjit Patil decided to conduct a hearing on the policy.

MLA from Ward A Raj Purohit met chief minister Devendra Fadnavis with a delegation in this regard and demanded scrapping of the policy in toto.

The BMC in its general body meeting had passed the new parking policy and decided to implement it as a pilot project in Ward A. The ward includes the areas of Churchgate, Colaba, Fort, Cuffe Parade, Cooperage and Marine Drive. The new parking policy would have increased the parking rates to Rs1,800 per car per month. The rate for the same in western suburban areas is Rs1,200 and Rs600 per month in the eastern suburbs.

The agitated residents from Ward A areas, through their 15 residents' associations, have made representations to the local elected representatives — corporator Vinod Shekhar and MLA Raj Purohit. Purohit has supported the residents and demanded scrapping of the policy. He said that the policy, if came into force, would hike parking charges by 300 per cent which the residents would not accept. He pointed out that the policy was brought and passed without taking local residents into confidence and this decision reflected the autocratic mindset of the BMC. He added that this would be opposed by him till the policy is scrapped.

Purohit said that he would be raising the issue in the ensuing budget session of the state assembly by using all the democratic tools available and ensure it is scrapped. He said that he would not mind coming out to the streets for the same.
