Cracking down on entrepreneurs, who have been allocated plots in industrial areas in Maharashtra but haven't set up industries on them, the state industries department has begun the process of taking back these lands.

The department has sought information about such land parcels in all districts for the purpose for which they were allocated for. Industries minister Subhash Desai said many who took land from the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) were more interested in speculation than setting up industries on them. Maharashtra has around 233 industrial areas.

"We have turned our attention to the issue… industries must come to Maharashtra. Moreover, when this land was acquired from farmers, it was for the purpose of setting up industries," said Desai. He added that after industries in Kolhapur threatened to move to Karnataka because they did not get land for their activities, the department had taken nine such idle plots in its possession. These parcels will be allocated to industries who want to set shop in Maharashtra.

Desai said they were in the process of taking over 100 more such plots in Kolhapur alone. "There are plots where industries have not been set up for eight to 10 years. The MIDC has issued notices to them in the past. We have asked for a stiff fine to be imposed," he added.

"Some of these people seem more interested in land than in setting up industries. They apply to the MIDC for transferring this land to others. In return, the MIDC gets a pittance while they walk off with the cream," said Desai. The state is also in the process of finalising its IT/ ITES policy.

The government is also in the process of reducing the permissions needed for setting up industries in state from the present 75 to 25. "There were too many hurdles, several complaints," he admitted.
Since the BJP-Shiv Sena-led dispensation took over in Maharashtra, industries had shown willingness to invest around Rs16,000 crore worth in the state, said Desai.
