In a historical decision announced by the state government, thousands of widows of state employees will be able to remarry without losing their pensions. The state cabinet made the important announcement in this regard.

What the earlier regulation said?
As per the earlier norms - Maharashtra state government pension rule 1982 - a widow was entitled for pension from the date of her husband's demise until the date of remarrying. If any widow remarried, her pension was cancelled.

When will the GR be issued?
The state government's decision, which would be implemented with immediate effect, comes in favour of the social security of thousands of women.

A highly placed source in the general administration department (GAD) on the condition of anonymity said, "The government resolution (GR) in this regard is under preparation and would be issued soon. As per the new pension rule, a widow would be entitled for pension till her death".

How was the pension disbursed till now?
It may be noted that the pay and account office (PAO) of the state government makes payments to pensioners in their pension account on the first day of every month.Every November, PAO seeks life certificates attested by branch managers of banks to ascertain the continuation of pension. If the certificates are not received within a month, the officials stop remitting pension to banks, considering that the pensioner is not alive.

Move to firm up women's social security
Dr Mahender Singh Churiana, a social worker, said, "This is a welcome move with regard to women's social security. It would help them live gracefully throughout their lives, even if their remarriage doesn't work. Other state governments also follow similar measures."
