Days ahead of the Make in India week in Mumbai, the Maharashtra government has stepped up its efforts to prepare skilled workforce for the manufacturing sector.

Six tripartite Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were inked on Wednesday to start large-scale training centres for engineering and polytechnic students. The industries include two auto-majors – Mercedes Benz and Yamaha – and two Mumbai-based drug manufacturers – K-lab and IPCA. Moreover, two umbrella organisations – Nasscom (1,800 IT companies) and Maharashtra Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MACCIA, 3,100 companies in various sectors) are also in the field.

The move is said to be a major initiative in the field of skill development, which has been a cause of concern for industries for a long time. The training centres would be set up at the existing government institutes. The MoUs would be effective for three years. Government institutes, Directorate of Technical Education and industry bodies are part of the MoUs.

"The objective is to make students employable with up-to-date knowledge of industries. This would be a win-win situation for both youngsters and employers both," said Dr Sanjay Chahande, secretary of Higher and Technical Education Department.

Dr SK Mahajan, head of Directorate of Technical Education, said, "While Yamaha and Mercedes would set up workstations, which would help train students in getting employment in auto industries, NASSCOM would focus on students training to make them employable." He added that MACCIA would offer holistic training for staff and students. The ICPA pharma will set up a centre of excellence and K-Lab will establish nano-science research lab at the government pharmacy institutes.

All V-Cs told to attend Make in India week

The higher education department has directed all vice-chancellors of state varsities to remain present during the Make in India. Dr Sanjay Chahande, secretary of Higher and Technical Education Department, said, "Innovation and research are universities' domain. Hence, their participation is much needed in the week, which showcases several innovations and discussion forums. V-Cs' participation would help them to implement a few things, once they go return to their universities. We want our universities to intensify efforts to promote innovation."
