Maharashtra government's 25% admission quota for Economically Weaker Sections kids paints a hazy picture

Under the Right to Education Act, the government has 25% quota admission process for children from economically weaker sections (EWS) for the entry level process. Through this, the kids are helped financially by the government, for completing their schooling. However, Anudanit Shiksha Bachao Samiti (ASBS) claims that the rule of financial aid is not applicable for the same section when the admission is sought in age appropriate classes.

K Narayan, secretary, ASBS said: “Out of the 30 students which ASBS is fighting in the high court for seeking admission under the 25% quota this year, 15 are now seven-year-olds and need admission in grade two currently.”

He added that the Samiti is in the dark about whether the students can get the benefit of financial aid (school fees) from the government, which is provided at the time of entry level admission process.

BD Phadtare, deputy director for school education, issued notices to 11 city schools for rejecting the admissions allotted to 30 children who were eligible in the online admission process of the RTE.

An education official with the BMC, confirming the rule, said: “The rule of financial aid that is provided at entry level admissions cannot be given to the child if s/he is admitted in an age appropriate class, even if the child is from EWS. This is because that child is not seeking admission during the entry level under RTE quota.”
