As of now, Mumbai has 39 police divisions, each headed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) rank officer.
The state government has accepted Mumbai Police Commissioner's recent proposal to create new police divisions for effective supervision. The police chief had suggested new police divisions at the sensitive Oshiwara and Nehru Nagar areas, which come under the jurisdiction of the Mumbai Police Commissionerate.
As of now, Mumbai has 39 police divisions, each headed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) rank officer.
"In his proposal, the Mumbai Police Commissioner had stated that currently, 93 police stations in the city are supervised by 39 police divisions headed by ACPs. In Mumbai, police divisions have been formed in a way that each division has two police stations under it's jurisdiction. However, when new police stations were formed in a particular division to accommodate growing needs, they remained under the existing divisions," said a home department official.
He added, the ACP of DN Nagar division supervises the newly-created Amboli, Versova, DN Nagar, and Oshiwara police stations, while the Chembur division ACP has Chembur, Govandi, Nehru Nagar, and Chunabhatti police stations under his jurisdiction.
"Taking into consideration the crime records, and sensitive and mixed localities at in Nagar and Chembur areas, a rearrangement of police stations was proposed in these areas for effective supervision. The Commissioner also asked for an ACP for the newly-proposed divisions, which has been approved by the government," said the official.
As per the new arrangement, DN Nagar Division would comprise Versova and DN Nagar police stations, Oshiwara Division would comprise Amboli and Oshiwara police stations, Chembur Division would comprise Govandi and Chembur police stations, while Nehru Nagar Division would comprise Nehru Nagar and Chunabhatti police stations.
