Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said that the state government was in favour of providing reservation benefits of the Scheduled Tribes category to the Dhangar (Shepherd) community, without disturbing the existing benefits of tribal communities.

Fadnavis had to come to the Upper House to make a statement after repeated adjournments on the issue. He said that the government has been in favour of the reservation from the first day in office, and assured the same to community leaders in Baramati during their massive agitation.

According to the CM, he already conducted a meeting with the advocate general, along with leaders from all parties who represent the Dhangar community.

Fadnavis informed that government was ready for detailed discussion on the issue and also made it clear that it was not an issue of a single community, of the entire society.

He appealed to the opposition to not politicise the issue. He said that despite the opposition after ruling the state for the last 15 years has suddenly realised the urgency of the issue, his government would discuss the issue threadbare.

Why the urgency now, asks CM
Both, the treasury benches and the opposition tried to politicise the issue and blamed each other for depriving the community of reservation benefits. Munde and other opposition MLCs blamed it on government, asking about what happened to their poll promise of providing reservation benefits within a month of coming to power. Fadnavis and Mungantiwar retaliated by asking them if the issue was so urgent, why the NCP and Congress kept it unresolved for last many years.
