The Maharashtra government plans to launch an initiative to bringing about yellow revolution to increase eggs production and provide appropriate rate for eggs produced by self-help groups. The state plans to undertake a pilot project in two districts of Palghar and Dhule in this regard.
Minister for women and child development Pankaja Munde told media persons that the state government through her department would help the women's self-help groups (SHG) to establish tie ups with corporate stores for buying eggs laid by country fowl.
Munde told mediapersons that at present it is not possible to fulfil domestic demand of eggs. She added that eggs are imported. She said that village level self-help groups would be encouraged to send eggs to big stores and the memorandum of understanding with such stores would ensure safe transportation of the eggs to the stores.
The total egg production in the state is approximately 75 lakh per day. As a result we have to import around 2 crore eggs daily from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu which are the highest egg producing states.
According to the central government data, production of eggs in Maharashtra was 528.6 ten million during 2015-16. It accounted 6.37 per cent of the total eggs produced in India during the year. There was a growth of 4.08 per cent in production of eggs in Maharashtra during 2015-16 over 2014-15.
Munde informed that the rural development department headed by her has started the Maharashtra state rural livelihood improvement campaign. She informed that this campaign has been implemented in an intensive manner in 26 districts and 254 talukas.
She informed that there are 3.50 lakh women's self-help groups and 5.5 lakh families have earned employment through these groups. The women and child development department will soon launch the Mahalaxmi Saras exhibition at the MMRDA ground, Bandra-Kurla complex between January 23 and February 4. The exhibition would host 511 stalls of self-help groups from 30 states including those from Maharashtra. The exhibition will have 70 stalls which would provide delicacies from various states and parts of Maharashtra.
