With the Opposition raising the issue of inquiry into alleged scams in irrigation projects in Vidarbha, the state government has given the go-ahead to Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) inquiries into three projects in the region.

Maharashtra minister for water resources Girish Mahajan informed media persons that he received a letter from ACB in this regard, and he has given the nod for probing Gosi Khurd, Jigav and Nimna Painganga projects.

At the turn of last month, Mahajan was in the eye of a storm for carrying his personal revolver at the public function.

The NCP, aggressively protesting the issue, had demanded Mahajan's removal from the Cabinet. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had backed Mahajan by making it clear that Mahajan had the licence to carry the weapon for the past two decades, and had done nothing wrong by carrying it.

The minister maintained the same argument while NCP leaders demanded his ouster. He alleged that since he is in charge of water resources, which during the 15-year Congress-NCP rule saw many alleged scams, NCP was targeting him fearing he would take action against its members.

Mahajan said he cleared the decks for the ACB inquiry. He added that Gosi Khurd, which is one of the biggest projects, has completed works worth Rs8,000 crore so far.

Mahajan said there were either Right To Information applications for these projects, or public interest litigations based on such applications, and after allegation of scams, the state had told the high court during the winter session about its green signal to the inquiry.
