The state on Thursday informed the Bombay high court that it has disbursed a sum of Rs25 lakh as compensation to families of five candidates who died during the recent police recruitment drive.

A division bench of chief justice Mohit Shah and justice BP Colabawala was informed by assistant government pleader Milind More that compensation of Rs5 lakh each has been disbursed to the family members of the five, four of whom died during the drive in Mumbai, while the fifth death was reported from a recruitment camp at Thane rural police.

The court was hearing a public interest litigation based on a letter from All Maharashtra Human Rights Welfare Association. In the letter, addressed through its vice president Shyam Shisode, the NGO had complained about lack of basic facilities at police recruitment drives. It stated that most of the aspirants, who appeared in Mumbai, had come from rural areas and had to spend time on roads and sleep under flyovers and open spaces at night.

The NGO had also alleged that no basic facilities — drinking water and primary medical care — were provided to the candidates.

The deceased included Ambadas Sonawane, 24, from Malegaon, Sainath Mali, 18, from Jalgaon, Vishal Kedar, 23, from Dindori in Nashik district, and Rahul Sapkale. They were among the 1.06 lakh applicants who came to Vikhroli centre to compete for 2,507 vacant posts in Mumbai. They were rushed to hospital after they felt uneasy on completion of the 5-km qualifying run, and were pronounced dead due to heat and exhaustion.

The letter stated that seven others were admitted to Rajawadi hospital in Ghatkopar in a critical condition and are being treated there. The NGO has urged the court to form a committee to monitor police recruitment and issue another direction to the state to pay appropriate compensation to the families of the deceased.
