In yet another political setback to the previous ruling alliance of Congress-NCP, the state government on Tuesday decided to cancel tenders for 94 works under 14 irrigation projects in the state, which were facing various inquiries including anti-corruption bureau inquiries.

The total cost as per tenders for all the 94 works is worth Rs3,295 crore and most of the works are from the period when Congress-NCP Democratic Front Government was in power. It is a setback for the Congress-NCP alliance and especially for the NCP, since the irrigation department was with the NCP for all the fifteen years between 1999 to 2014.

Addressing a press conference after the state cabinet meeting, the minister for water resources Girish Mahajan informed the media that out of the 94 tenders cancelled by the government, 81 of them were from Gosi Khurd project, while 12 works are from 12 Konkan region projects and one work if from Kikavi project in Nashik. He further informed that the government will issue fresh tenders for all the said cancelled works, which are under the scanner of ACB and other agencies.

Mahajan informed that after the public interest litigation (PIL) was filed by Mayank Gandhi, the state government had given its say in the favor of anti-corruption bureau inquiry of 12 irrigation projects in Konkan region. He further informed that the inquiry was ongoing for the last 18 months and that the anti-corruption bureau was conducting an open inquiry into Gosi Khurd project related 81 works.

Mahajan told that the inquiries were going on for the works which had tenders above Rs25 crores estimates.

Mahajan made it clear that the irregularities in 81 works under Gosi Khurd project amounted to Rs1,600 crore, while 12 projects in Konkan region are to the tune of Rs1,515 crore. The amount involved in Kikvi project is to the tune of Rs189 crores.

He informed that while issuing fresh new tenders for the 94 works, the government will put a precondition of a stipulated deadline for completing the work.
