After repeated requests by the trucking sector, the state government abolished the 'escort' fee starting Friday.

Escort fee is to paid to the local municipal authorities for services rendered by an 'escort', an individual who accompanies a truck on their behalf to ensure that goods are not offloaded within the municipal limit. This, truckers said, was a facet of the Octroi mechanism, and with Octroi abolished everywhere in the state barring Mumbai, logically, the escort fee should go too.

In a statement, the All India Motor Transport Congress, one of the country's largest transport bodies, said that orders had been issued by urban development to the corporation to stop collection of escort fees in the state. Out of 27 municipal corporations, orders to 24 corporations have been issued. The matter is pending with the corporations of Sholapur, Dhule, Malgaon for completion of formalities, the statement said.

As reported earlier by DNA, various truck industry federations like the All India Motor Transport Congress and the Bombay Good Transporters Association (BGTA) have been asking the state government to abolish the escort fees.
