Maharashtra government announces compensation for deceased cops' families

According to the police, the families of the late police constables Shinde and Gawand will be entitled to monetary compensation of each month salary the constables were entitled to derive till the time of their retirement.

Maharashtra government on Friday approved a proposal given by the Mumbai police to compensate late Vilas Shinde who recently succumbed to his injuries after being attacked by a biker in Khar and Ajay Gawand who died in 2014 when he was beaten by a homeless alcoholic in Dongri.

According to the police, the families of the late police constables Shinde and Gawand will be entitled to monetary compensation of each month salary the constables were entitled to derive till the time of their retirement. The compensation would also include dearness allowance, increment, and revised pay as per the 7th Pay Commission. The families will also be entitled to get ex-gratia of Rs 1.50 lakh or upto 20 times of the last drawn salary of the constable, whichever would be more. Besides this both the families will be allowed to accommodate in police quarters, or be entitled to derive the rent of their personal house.

Late constable Ajay Gawand of Dongri police station, had died in November 2014 after a brutal assault by a thief. He was among a team of policemen to respond to a call of theft at the Bharat Petroleum building in Wadi Bunder, and was pelted by stones from the roof.

The constable was later commemorated with a statue and a community hall was also named after him, both located across the road from the police station where he was posted.

While late traffic police constable Vilas Shinde of Bandra division was allegedly attacked with a wooden plank by a juvenile after the constable asked for vehicle documents at a petrol pump. The incident occurred in Khar in August this year and the juvenile was nabbed by the police in the late hours on the same day while his brother was nabbed after a couple of days.

Unfortunately, on Shinde's 13th day ceremony, his mother also passed away. According to the police, 75-year-old Kalawati Shinde died of a heart attack in her home in Satara at around 11 am while she was praying.
