The vegetables and fruits prices on Friday shot through the roof in the wholesale vegetable market in Vashi. It has been more than double. The veggie prices are likely to go up on Saturday and Sunday.

Farmers in Maharashtra have gone on an indefinite strike from June 1, demanding complete loan waiver, implementation of Dr. Swaminathan Commission report etc.

In protest, farmers have stopped sending vegetables, fruits and milk to cities. On the second day of the strike, the supply of vegetables got badly affected at APMC Vashi. The Vashi APMC is the main supplier of veggies and fruits to Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai.

Shankar Pingale, ex-director at the vegetable market at Vashi told DNA on Friday that they received only 150 truck load of vegetables against the average supply of 450 to 500 trucks.

"As an effect, the veggie prices went drastically up. If yesterday, cauliflower was sold Rs. 120 per kg, today the rate is almost Rs. 250 per kg. The same with other vegetables. The rates are almost double and it is expected that on Saturday and Sunday, the prices will soar more. The rates depend on demand and supply," said Pingale.

Pingale further added that out of total 150 trucks of veggies, only 10 trucks are from Maharashtra, the 140 trucks are from Gujarat, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. "If the strike continues, then tomorrow, we may not also get these numbers of truckloads of vegetables. Farmers may block these trucks at various locations," continued Pingale.

Sanjay Pansare, a wholesale fruit trader, said that they received only 180 trucks load of fruits against average 450-500 trucks.

"The fruits prices also went to roof today. This trend will continue as long as the farmer's strike goes on. Maharashtra government is responsible for this sorry state of affairs. They damaged APMC and changed its policies that is not giving good result and rates to farmers products. From last two years, farmers are not getting good rates to their produces. The situation went from bad to worse in last one year," Pansare said.
