This is a logical way of handling such situations as, on road, getting into an argument with members of the public really does not make sense, said a senior officer.

The state Director General of Police (DGP) office has issued guidelines to his men on how to deal with traffic offenders who get into an argument with the on-duty officer taking action against them. The guidelines come a day after a video of three men getting into an argument with a sub-inspector near Airoli flyover was circulated on social media.

The circular issued states that it's come to the notice of the DGP office that when a policeman takes legal action against traffic rule offenders, some miscreants gather on the road and create ruckus, leading to a law and order situation. At times, the situation goes out of hand and reaches to the point of physical blows, it adds, saying that in order to avoid such situations, the DGP office has instructed that henceforth if any traffic offender gets into an argument with the on-duty officer, the latter should avoid taking action on the person right there on the road.

The instruction states that the officer should note down the model of the vehicle along with the registration number, name of the offender, mobile phone number and allow the person to go. S/he should be called to the police station or taffic chowky later on the basis of the details provided and action should be taken against him/her then.

"This is a logical way of handling such situations as, on road, getting into an argument with members of the public really does not make sense," said a senior officer.

The Navghar police on Friday had arrested three people for allegedly getting into an altercation with a sub-inspector when he was said to be taking action against a truck driver. The three accused, however, claimed that they got into an argument with the officer after he slapped the driver.
