Soon after the trust vote controversy on Wednesday, a group of citizens and activists from across Maharashtra have shot off a letter to the CM, chief secretary of the state and leader of opposition demanding the live TV telecast of proceedings of the legislative assembly and council on TV, on the lines of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

In the letter, the activists and citizens state, "We demand that Working / Discussions/ Proceedings etc in Vidhi Mandal / Vidhan Sabha / Vidhan Parishad be telecast on TV similar to Loksabha/ Rajyasabha."

Vihar Durve, one of the activists who signed the petition, told dna, "We have every right to know what happened in the assembly on Wednesday. But unfortunately, the state doesn't telecast the house proceedings and hence we get just secondary information through media. This must be changed and telecast of the proceedings must be started immediately."

Citizens also demand that details of the meetings of the PMC/MCGM/ PCMC must be put up on social media and website. "The move will not only make the citizens of the state more aware about their representatives but also bring transparency in the system," said Durve.

Several ciztiens dna spoke to hailed the move saying the telecast will help them to keep a watch on their representatives' performance. House wife Ranjana Singh said, "Besides understanding the whole controversy of trust vote, I think it would be good if we know what our representatives are doing in the house throughout the tenure of five years. This will help strengthen our democracy."

Bhaskar Prabhu, RTI activist, seconded the demand, "Section 4 of RTI Act says that all proceedings of lower and upper house must be disclosed to public. Hence, electronic dissemination of the proceedings can be done, especially when the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are already doing so. The state government must make arrangements for the same."

The CM could not be contacted immediately. A senior official from the director general of information and publicity said, "A decision in this regard can be taken only by the speaker and assembly members. However, this would not be a costly affair."
