Mumbai gets highest share of students in the 90-and-above club across nine divisions; more schools register 100% passing rate

City schools performed exceptionally well in the Class 10 board examinations, the results of which were declared on Friday. Mumbai division, which also includes Thane, Raigad and Palghar, stood fourth amongst the nine divisions in the state with an overall success rate of 90.41 per cent.

816 (22 per cent) of the 3,679 schools in the city recorded a cent percent result this year. The number of students scoring 90 per cent and above also went up in the city - from 10,157 in 2017 to 13,329 - this year. With this, the division has got the highest share of students in the 90 and above elite club across all the nine divisions.

Four students from the Mumbai division scored a cent percent result of which three students - Shrutika Mahajan, Bhavik Bharambe and Riddhi Karkare, all hailing from Dombivali - made it to the 100 percenter club.

Subhash Borse, Secretary, Mumbai Divisional Board, said that the city has improved its performance as compared to last year. "Getting bonus marks for art, culture and sports have helped students score higher this year. The division has got a large share of schools who have registered a 100 per cent passing rate," Borse added.

Rakhi Mukherjee, Principal, Utpal Sanghvi High School in Juhu said that students have performed very well with many scoring above 90 and several getting distinctions. "The school has a 100 per cent result and 31.65 per cent of the total students have secured 90 per cent and above," she added.

This year, a total of 36 students were barred from attending two examinations from the Mumbai division for various reasons, including cheating. While one was declared innocent by the education board, results of 33 accused students were held in reserve until further investigations. According to a report given by the Mumbai Police to the divisional board, a large number of students were found circulating exam question papers on Whatsapp.

Schools under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also did well in the exams. Students overcame all odds and emerged successful. 14 schools, under the corporation, saw 100 per cent results with all the students passing with flying colours. The overall pass percentage of all the BMC schools was 73 per cent. "Our schools have performed really well this year. It is better than that of last year and there is a 5 per cent jump in the overall pass percentage," said Mahesh Palkar, Education Officer, BMC.

Shrutika Mahajan
IES Chandrakant Patkar Vidyalaya, Dombivali, 100%

Shrutika managed to get the perfect score by ensuring that she studied regularly and solved a lot of practice papers. “I was very confident of scoring over 95 per cent marks but this comes as a complete surprise,” she said. Shrutika, who was born and raised in Dombivali, was always passionate about dance and pursued her hobby religiously for over 7 years. “ I am trained in Bharatnatyam. My passion for dance helped me score bonus scores, which ultimately improved my score,” said Shrutika. She wants to become an engineer and will start coaching for the same in the coming days.

Bhavik Bharambe
Model English School, Dombivali, 100%

Bhavik Bharambe from Dombivali was ecstatic after getting to know that he had scored a perfect 100 in his board exams. Bharambe said that the perfect score was a cakewalk for him. “I just used the school notes and a few reference books which helped better the exam preparation,” Bhavik said. His hobbies include playing cricket and reading. He is also a national-level chess player and that helped him score 15 grace marks for the exams. He plans to pursue Science stream and is planning to prepare for JEE. “I want to become an engineer,” he added.

Khushi Vora
Dr S Radhakrishnan School, 99.60%

Khushi, who stood first in her school, attributed her success to her attentiveness in class. “My basics were very clear and I always attended all classes to understand things better. My school and parents encouraged me a lot, which acted as a great support for me to focus on my studies,” she said. Khushi got 15 bonus marks as she is trained in classical dance. “I love dancing and I pursued it even during the board year.” She wants to become a doctor and will now begin her preparation by opting for science
in her college.
