The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has decided to go on a day long strike on Friday in protest against attacks on their colleagues in Kanpur.

As the protest entered the seventh day on Thursday in Uttar Pradesh, MARD has written a letter to UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav to fulfill their demands – arrest of Samajwadi Party MLA Irfan Solanki who was allegedly involved in the clash, action against SSP Yashasvi Yadav and withdrawal of charges against 24 junior doctors. The resident doctors in Mumbai wore a black badge to work on March 5.

Dr Harsholhas Panshewdikar, general secretary, Central MARD, said: "The strike is against the brutal attack on our friends in Kanpur. We will be joined by resident doctors from other states too. If our demands are not met immediately, we will intensify our agitation across the country."

MARD said that they have no intention to cause inconvenience to patients but they will not tolerate violence against doctors. "We want stringent action against the culprits and we will protest in a silent way," said Dr Santosh Wackchaure, president of central MARD.

MARD also held a 'maun vrat'' in the JJ hospital campus on March 5 after which the one-day strike was announced. Meanwhile, the civic and state-run hospitals have roped in senior doctors to ensure patient health care is not affected and has decided to cancel planned surgeries for the day.

Dr Shubhangi Parker, acting dean of KEM Hospital, said: "The resident doctors informed us about the strike very late. Since we can't neglect emergency services, planned surgeries have been postponed for a day and patients have been informed."

"We have asked all senior doctors to step in and coordinate for the day. We will ensure that the strike doesn't affect a single patient," said Dr Parker.
