Of the 227 corporators of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, 11 from Shiv Sena, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and eight former corporators have taken a plunge into state assembly election. Of the 17 city representatives, 16 are contesting in the city with a total of 36 constituencies while Samajwadi Party corporator Rais Sheikh has filed his nomination papers from the power loom town Bhiwandi in the neighboring Thane district.

Of the 36 seats, BJP and its partners are fighting 17, leaving 19 to ally Shiv Sena. Both the parties hope to win all 36 seats following victory in all six seats in Lok Sabha election. Congress, NCP and Samajwadi Party have formed an alliance and hinted that they will improve their tally by cashing on rising resentment against the BJP-Sena alliance which rules India's richest civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

Of the remaining 10 sitting corporators, three are official nominees of Sena including the city mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar (Bandra east), Ramesh Korgonkar (Bhandup west) and Dilip Lande (Chandivali). BJP has given candidature to Parag Shah in Ghatkopar east replacing the incumbent legislator and former minister Prakash Mehta. Shah's nomination had evoked angry reactions on Thursday. Mehta supporters shouted slogans and damaged Parag Shah's car and thereafter Mehta had to intervene and make an appeal not to indulge in anti-party activities.

The Congress has fielded Asif Zakaria in Bandra west and Jagdish Amin Kutty in Andheri east while the party corporator Sufiyan Vanu is contesting as an independent in Mankhurd Shivajinagar against Sena nominee Vitthal Lokre and ally Samajwadi Party candidate Abu Azmi.

Further, Akhil Bharatiya Sena corporator Geeta Gawli is fighting from Byculla seat against sitting MIM legislator Waris Pathan and Congress nominee Madhu Chavan.

As far as eight former corporators are concerned, Shiv Sena has fielded Yamini Jadhav from Byculla seat. Jadhav will take on Pathan, Chavan and Gawli. MNS has nominated Sanjay Turde in Kalina seat against Sena sitting legislator Sanjay Potnis.

On its part, Congress party has nominated Suresh Koparkar in Bhandup west and Ajanta Yadav in Kandivali east.

NCP has fielded Dhananjay Pisal in Vikhroli constituency against Sena's sitting MLA Sunil Raut who is the brother of party MP Sanjay Raut. On the other hand, MNS has nominated Sandeep Deshpande against sitting Sena legislator Sad Sarvankar.

Former Sena corporator Sanjay Bhalerao is fighting in Ghatkopar west as an independent where BJP has renominated sitting MLA Ram Kadam.
