The Leader of Opposition in the state assembly, Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, on Sunday alleged that there was enough ground to question if there was an attempt on the life of Indrani Mukerjea inside the jail to save someone else. Mukerjea is a prime accused in the case of murder of her daughter Sheena Bora.

Addressing the media at the office of Congress state unit at Tilak Bhavan, Vikhe-Patil also expressed fear for the life of Samir Gaikwad of Sanatan Sanstha, who was arrested for his alleged involvement in the case of murder of activist Govind Pansare earlier this year.

He claimed that everyone in the state was aware about the government's embarrassing position after the Sanatan Sanstha's role came out in the open with the arrest of Samir Gaikwad for Pansare's murder. He said while the Sanstha was in so much trouble, one or the other minister kept backing it up on a daily basis, and that if Indrani was not safe in jails, there was no guarantee that Gaikwad would not be killed to save the face of Sanatan Sanstha and the government.

He said all the developments in the Sheena Bora murder case were leading to more and more questions, including whether Indrani really attempted suicide or someone tried to eliminate her.

Vikhe-Patil said first of all, the then Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria was suddenly transferred after the case was cracked. It was followed by the surprising decision to hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He that when the case was reaching its last stage of investigation, it is natural to question why it was being handed over to the CBI. He said even though the government is giving reasons behind the move, there is some ground in allegations that the case was being transferred to save some powerful people.
