Maharashtra: 100 days on, education minister Vinod Tawde gives his government an 'A'

Tawde said that he had visited the house during a recent visit to London. He said that the state cabinet has approved the purchase of the house at a cost of Rs40 crore. He said the government would try to inaugurate a museum in this house on April 14, which is the anniversary of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's birth.

Stating that the Fadnavis government has achieved a lot in its 100 days in power, minister for education, culture and sports Vinod Tawde said that in addition to important decisions like re-starting student's council elections, removing negative marking for MBBS and BDS entrance examinations and introducing choice-based credit system in the coming academic year, the state government has decided to buy the house in London where Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar lived for a while.

He said the government would try to inaugurate a museum in this house on April 14, which is the anniversary of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's birth.

Tawde said that starting student council elections from the 2015-16 academic year was yet another important decision. He said that he would ensure that the Marathi language gets the classical language status by February 27, which is Marathi Bhasha Divas or Marathi language day. He said that his department has now fixed the age limits for seeking admissions to junior kg and first standards. He also said that a committee has been appointed to look into measures for reducing the burden of school bags on students.

Tawde said that his departments have taken path-breaking decisions including classifying Dahi Handi as an adventure sport. He said that he had set up three committees for improving the quality of education provided in the state, creating new acts, as well as splitting up large universities in the interests of efficiency.

He said that when it comes to Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, Maharashtra is the first state to undertake this campaign in all the universities in the state. He said that all the schools in Maharashtra would be asked to celebrate Yoga Day on June 21 and organise yoga programs that day.

In his previous interview with dna, conducted after the government completed two months in power, Tawde had spoken of achievements such as providing impetus to three major projects: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj memorial at Arabian sea, the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar memorial at Indu Mills, and the multi-modal international cargo hub and international airport project at Nagpur.
