The beautiful traditional handiwork of Paithan and Yeola weavers is all set to debut at Lakmé Fashion Week in Mumbai, starting August 27.

"Paithani is one of the most beautiful handiwork from the state. It was very popular in the past but has lost its sheen off late. We wish to promote the work of Paithan and Yeola weavers by exhibiting their art in collaboration with the country's top fashion designers. This will not only help the weavers and the art, but also boost the textile sector in the state," said state Textile minister Chandrakant Dada Patil.

Patil was speaking to dna on Thursday on the sidelines of an exhibition of Benarasi work at Bhau Daji Lad museum. The exhibition was curated by BJP spokesperson and fashion designer Shaina NC, and will be open to public for a month. The dresses featuring modern Benarasi motifs and cuts have been designed by Reena Dhaka and Ritu Kumar, among others. Union textile minister Santosh Gangwar, Maharashtra Governor Vidyasagar Rao, Chief Secretary Swadhin Kshatriya, several fashion designers and celebrities were present in the event.

Meanwhile, works of 40 ace designers will be showcased at Lakmé Fashion Week. "In addition to that, 70 exclusive pieces by Benarasi weavers will also be exhibited. This first of its kind initiative is a part of the Make in India scheme," said Shaina.

Made of very fine silk, Paithani sarees are woven on handloom. The embroidery is done with gold and silver threads, and the motifs are inspired by the Ajanta Caves artwork. The art of weaving Paithani flourished in 200 BC, during the Satvahana era.
