In a major relief to residents of areas like Bhuleshwar and Kalbadevi, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has asked for the gold smelting and polishing units to be shifted elsewhere in Mumbai on the grounds of fire safety.

In the 'Lokshahi Din' program organised in Mantralaya on Monday, Fadnavis asked for these units to be given a three-month notice and for the BMC to hold a meeting to evolve solutions. A Kalbadevi resident Harkisan Goradia had lodged a complaint in this regard.

Chawls and old buildings in areas like Zaveri Bazaar, Tel Galli, Kalbadevi and Bhuleshwar house units that polish and smelt gold and make jewellery. Local residents complain that these pose a major fire hazard in the densely populated and congested area.

In 2001, a building housing these jewellery units caught fire after a cylinder blast which claimed 24 lives. A report by then BMC additional commissioner Ajit Kumar Jain had suggested that these establishments be shifted to other areas.

However, Sharad Bansal of the Bhuleshwar Residents Association, said they "had lost all hope." After the 2001 fire, the state government had promised to shift out these units within a month but little happened in 17 years, he complained.

He added that due to the menace of these units, around 60% of the local residents had been forced to shift out.
