Maharashtra government has undertaken infrastructure projects worth Rs 3.34 lakh crore across the state. The government expects that the growth in infrastructure will help the state to attain its goal of becoming a 'trillion dollar economy' by 2025. The investment has been largely for roads, highways, coastal roads, airports, metro rail corridor etc.

In a session on 'Infrastructure: The Growth Engine'' at the ongoing Magnetic Maharashtra summit, the government said that Rs 1.34 crore of the total Rs 3.34 lakh crore is being utilised by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for the development of transportation in Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The remaining Rs 2 lakh crore will be used for various undertakings including the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), Maharashtra Airport Development Corporation (MASC) and Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).

UPS Madan, the MMRDA commissioner, said that the metro rail corridors, the multimodal corridors, the trans-harbour sea link and the strengthening of railways will be implemented in the MMR to strengthen the transport infrastructure.

"Infrastructure-led growth will turn out to be a game changer for the state," said Madan.

Meanwhile, the development of the Rs 46,000 crore Mumbai Nagpur Super Communication Expressway or Maharashtra Samruddhi Marg is already underway by MSRDC.

Radheshyam Mopalwar, the MSRDC vice-chairman and managing director, said that the undertaking has already lined up investments worth Rs 22,000 crore from various domestic banks and the contract is expected to be awarded by April.

"The 700 km Mumbai Nagpur Super Communication Expressway will interlink the hinterland with Mumbai and Jawaharlal Nehru Ports and thereby connect the international market. The project will also connect 10 districts and help facilitate the development of growth centres in 24 districts. The project will create 2 million jobs," noted Mopalwar.

Mopalwar explained that the government had laid emphasis on attracting investments in the industrial sectors, with emphasis on manufacturing, information technology and ITES but now they are focusing on infrastructure-led growth.
