Under the scheme, subsidy on nine LPG cylinders per year will be directly deposited in the bank accounts of the beneficiaries.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Saturday launched the Direct Benefit Transfer for LPG (DBTL) scheme in neighbouring Wardha district, about 80 kms from Nagpur.
Under the scheme, subsidy on nine LPG cylinders per year will be directly deposited in the bank accounts of the beneficiaries.
According to officials, the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has launched the scheme in 18 districts across the country and the move is expected to curb wastage and leakages in the subsidy delivery system and improve its efficiency.
Wardha is among the districts in the country chosen by the Centre for the subsidy since the Aadhar card enrolment in Maharashtra was the highest in Wardha, officials said.
Besides Wardha, the scheme has been simultaneously launched in Anantpur, Chitoor, East Godavari, Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy (in Andhra Pradesh), Diu (Daman and Diu), North Goa (Goa), Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Una, Tumkur (all Himachal Pradesh), Pathanamthitta (Kerala), Pondicherry (Pondicherry), SBS Nagar, Nawansahar (both Punjab), East Nimar (Khandwa) and Harda (both Madhya Pradesh), they said.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Minister Food and Civil Supplies Anil Deshmukh, Minister of State for Finance Rajendra Mulak and others were present on the occasion.
"With the introduction of the Direct Benefit Transfer for LPG (DBTL) scheme, the middlemen and agents will get eliminated," Chavan said on the occasion.
"This is an attempt to empower people in the most transparent manner," he said, adding that the country was utilising the technology for the benefit of people.
On the issue of drought in Maharashtra, Chavan said the government has been spending huge amount on the supply of drinking water and fodder for cattle in parts of the state facing acute water shortage.
The Chief Minister said lakhs of people have benefited under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MNREGA) scheme, which has helped curb migration to the urban areas.
Chavan hailed the Right to Information (RTI) Act, saying it has brought transparency in the administration. "The Right to Education Act and the proposed Food Security Bill will also rely on Aadhar," he said.
