Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday announced that lottery for the 10,000 flats availed through Mhada and MMRDA for textile mill workers would be held immediately instead of December 2015. He also made it clear that land from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) would be made available for Mhada, so that all mill workers can be given flats.

Fadnavis's statement comes a day after mill workers held a huge march for their demands. He informed that with respect to the land of closed textile mills, the available floor space index (FSI) is shared equally by the mill owner, Mhada and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as per provisions of the development control rules (No. 58) and as per the government notification issued on March 20, 2001. Flats measuring 225sqft each would be provided on this land, he added.

Fadnavis informed the House that once the BMC gives its nod for the redevelopment of 12 textile mills out of the 52 closed, Mhada's share would be determined.

Till date, 5,644 mill workers have been provided with flats and 1,281 flats have yet not been handed over for various reasons, he said.

The CM told the assembly that in the second phase 6,794 flats are under construction on the lands of six mills, while construction of 2,911 flats is proposed on the lands of 10 mills.

Fadnavis told the House that he has instructed his government to plan for 16,000 flats and that, though land has been made available from the mills, the government can provide flats to 38,000 mill workers at the most. He said that taking into account the huge number of applicants, the government would take land from the MMR and transfer it to Mhada, so that all workers can get their own flats.
