The bridge connecting Jogeshwari West and Goregaon East is almost complete, after having faced numerous hurdles in its last six years of construction. It will be thrown open to commuters from August 23 onwards.

The motive behind this bridge was to decongest the traffic and reduce bottlenecks for commuters who travel between the east and west regions.

Speaking with iamin, a BMC engineer (Bridges) shared that peak hours between 5pm and 7pm tend to be a huge waste of time for commuters, as they spend almost 90 minutes on an average, stuck in sluggish traffic. “The area near the Barfiwala signal and Juhu Bus Depot is a commuter’s nightmare,” he said.

The bridge consists of a total of four lanes. Two of these connect SV Road and the Western Express Highway whereas the other two connect the highway to Link Road. As of now, the former is expected to be open to commuters from the 23rd of this month. The BMC official also pointed out that the lanes connecting the highway to Link Road had not been accounted for in the current estimate. “It is uncertain when this section will be open to the public. Hopefully, it will be opened soon,” he added.

Irfan Suri, a resident of Jogeshwari who is currently engaged in the plywood business and owns a shop near the southern-end of the bridge in Jogeshwari, said, “I often have to travel from here to Mahim to meet wholesalers for work. The journey to and fro is exhausting, not because of the distance, but because of the slow pace traffic. While coming back in the evenings it’s the worst; the traffic doesn't seem to move at all. Hopefully once this bridge is open to the public, the traffic will be reduced and we can commute more freely.”
