Does the railways take around 30 years to take decision on selling scrapped oil containers? Yes, apparently!

If one of the senior Western Railway official posted in Bandra yard is to be believed, four oil containers have been lying idol in the yard for nearly 30 years. These wagons are parked in the railway yard on the east of Khar railway station. The area used to be a scrap yard until Bandra terminus came up. Now they are covered by trees, bushes and grass that have come up around them.

A gang-man who has been in service for around 28 in the area, said: "When I joined railways as a young boy, I saw these wagons parked here. Now I am about to retire and they are still here. After being left unsold in scrap auction, they were supposed to be shifted to another yard, but by then, they had become immovable, and hence remain parked here."

A senior official in Bandra yard said: "They cannot be moved. Had officials compulsorily auctioned them along with other scrap, they could have been sold long ago. But, apparently there is no accountability."

"This is sheer negligence. Officials concerned have not taken appropriate steps for reasons best known to them. There is space shortage in Bandra yard for maintenance and up-keep of passenger coaches. This is waste of precious space."

About two years ago, WR auctioned steel scrap, earning about Rs 300 crore. If officials had pushed hard, this scrap too would have brought in money.

Earlier scrap used to be shifted to Virar railway yard, but now that has been converted into maintenance yard for local trains. Now scrap is shifted to Pardi yard in Gujrat, which has adequate space.

Sharat Chandrayan, CPRO, Western Railway, said: "These wagons are here for being auctioned. We are in the process of floating tenders for selling this scrap. These wagons cannot be moved, so they would be scrapped and dismantled on the site itself and place made for other activities at the earliest."
