Two pet dogs and a turtle which had had been locked in a Nalasopara flat for almost a month, were rescued by fire brigade officials on Monday afternoon. The starving canines – Tyson, a German Shephard and Gauri, a Labrador – were rescued after neighbours informed an animal activist. The rare turtle was also rescued.

The house belongs to Vijay Pandagle and his wife Priya who lived in Matoshri apartments in Moregaon area. The couple fled their home on January 20, allegedly to evade their creditors.

People in the building alerted an animal activist about the plight of the dogs after an unbearbale stench started emanating from the house. This activist, in turn, informed the fire brigade department which rescued the animals. Left starving, the canines were found consuming their faeces. The turtle had fungus all over its shell and the water in which it was kept was very dirty.

The Pandagle couple, said the police, had duped several people by floating an investment scheme. When some of these people turned up at their residence, they fled their home, leaving the animals locked in the house.

"The couple left their house on January 20. The fans and lights in the house were on and the dogs were barking ferociously," said a neighbour.

The animal activist, Pallavi Mehta from People For Animals, said that the police did not provide any assistance after which she approached the Vasai-Virar Fire Brigade department whose officials broke open the door.

The starving dogs, which were consuming their faeces, said Mehta. "The dogs were ill and needed immediate care and so we rushed them to the doctor. Later, we will send them to Thane Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) for adoption," she added.

President of Thane SPCA, Shakuntala Majumdar, said that the brutality and lackdiasical approach by the owners can land them behind bars. The attitude towards their pets shows that the owners need to be guided well. Several such incidents of abandoning of pets have come up," she said.

An officer from Nalasopara police station said that they had sent two constables to the couple's flat for assistance. "No complaint has been lodged with us by anyone yet. But we will initiate legal action once the dogs are rehabiltiated and the animal hospital approaches us," said the officer.
