A year after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) allowed an NGO to commission a dialysis centre at one of its hospitals in Mulund, it has come to light that the public is yet to get its benefits.

As part of its decision to operate dialysis centres at its hospitals in the suburbs with the help of NGOs, the civic body had offered JITO Mumbai space to run a centre at MT Agarwal General Hospital. The organisation, however, has not commissioned the facility, causing inconvenience to patients.

"The civic body has two hospitals in Mulund — Agarwal and another in the name of freedom fighter Vinayak Savarkar. As Savarkar hospital is short on space, BMC is not able to start a centre there. And despite making space available at Agarwal hospital, the organisation has not initiated the service," said BJP's Mulund corporator Prakash Gangadhare, who had raised a point of this regard earlier.

Reacting to the concerns, deputy municipal commissioner (improvement) Kishor Kshirsagar said BMC will take action against the NGO if it does not commission the centre. "We will give the agency concerned a month to start the centre. If it does not, we will have to take action by appointing a new agency," he added.

BMC has been allowing private charitable trusts or NGOs to run dialysis centres as part of its public-private initiative launched in 2010.

Residents have demanded that the corporation make sure the dialysis centres are made operational at the earliest. "If BMC starts the centre, it will benefit the public for they won't have to go to private hospitals or look for government hospitals located elsewhere," said Avinash Jangam, a resident.

Private hospitals normally charge patients up to Rs5,000 per cycle.
