Residents of Girgaum have alleged that the police and civic authorities are trying to shield the company which sent the contractor to dig a section of Chandanwadi Hindu crematorium on Thursday.

In order to lay the foundation of a mobile tower, some men appointed by a well-known 4G internet service provider broke down the compound wall of the crematorium and dug up the section where children aged below five were buried. The skulls and bones of children unearthed in the process sparked a controversy.

Amhi Girgaonkar, a local group from the Girgaum area, has claimed that they had raised an alarm last week about the situation in the burial ground and also about the mobile tower. Members of the group Shashank Dhargalkar and Vaibhav Chauhan had visited the burial ground and made a detailed report on it. They are now planning to take up the issue with competent authorities since, according to them, the police and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are shirking their responsibility on the matter.

Satyaprakash Singh, assistant municipal commissioner of C ward, has said that the burial ground is private property. However, he added that the piling work which was done by the contractor was resurfaced and the police had seized all the material. "Workers appointed by contractor fled from the spot as people who gathered there were turning violent. We have registered an FIR against unknown persons," said Singh.

Acting on the FIR seeking action under the MRTP Act, LT Marg police claim that they have already started gathering details of Thursday's case. However, no one has been arrested so far.

On Thursday, Pradyuman Badheka, president of the Bombay Hindu Burning and Burial Ground Committee, had said that while the committee had agreed to the installation of a tower, the space given to the company was different. Also, the committee was not aware that Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) permissions were not sought before starting the work.
