Starting at 4 am, 700 volunteers collect 40 trucks of garbage from Juhu beach within few hours, bollywood steps in.
Like every other day 73-year-old Sudhir Seth, visited Juhu beach on Friday morning but with a new intention. Every year, after the final day of immersion Seth visits the beach area with a clean-up purpose rather than walking.
Looking at the sorry condition of the beach every year, many citizens, college and school students have been coming out in large number to clean-up the beach and make it look neat and clean.
Speaking about why he visited Juhu beach at 5 am in the morning, Seth said, “ Its been 40 years since I have been coming here for morning walk. For the past four years I have been joining the dna eco-ganesh team to clean and bring back my beach in a good condition. Many youngsters and BMC workers too help a lot. After the last day of immersion, the shabby state of the beach is not worth seeing.”
Bollywood actors like Elli Avram and Chetan Hansraj also participated in the drive.
“I wanted to participate in this initiative because I will like to do my bit for the society. There should be more awareness about celebrating the festival in an eco-friendly way. Earlier, even I have been complaining about the dirty condition. But rather than just complaining we should respect the nature and come forward to clean-up the beach. The eco-friendly ganesha not only dissolves quickly but also helps decrease the pollution level in the environment," said actress Eli Avram.
Students and citizens participated in the initiative from various schools, colleges and groups including N M College nature club and rotaract club, Ritumbara College, Holy Cross Youths, Juhu Soul of the city, Juhu Citizens Welfare Group, Khar friends, etc.
"Around 100 members of Wildlife and Nature Club from my college are participating in this initiative. This is our second year. Rather than talking about eco-friendly ganesh people should actually act upon it. There should be more number of sarvajanik ganpati idols rather than increase in number of household idols. This will help to reduce the pollution level in the water bodies," said Foram Panchal a student from NM college.
"The energy of the youngsters is amazing. I am impressed by the way the students came forward and cleaned up the entire beach early in the morning even before the walkers and visitors started coming in for the walk. After 11 days of the Ganpati festival people should come forward and extend a helping hand to clean-up the beach,” added another actor Chetan Hansraj.
Larson Fernandes founder of Juhu Angels and operation manager with ISS facility services India told the media, “On the last day of immersion in Juhu beach over 1,353 big idols as well as over 3,500 small idols were immersed. We started the beach clean-up at 4 am in the morning where around 700 volunteers participated in the initiative and collected over 40 trucks of garbage within few hours to clean-up the beach.”
Morever Yogesh Lakhani, founder of Bright Outdoor Media, also participated in the drive saying, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness. We need to keep our city neat, clean and green. We should appreciate the BMC workers who are cleaning up the beach with sleepless night and maintaining it. Every citizen should step ahead and take up the responsibility to maintain the beach clean.”
