In order to fix potholes during the monsoon without wasting time, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will make cold mix material at its Worli asphalt mix plant. The civic administration received a go-ahead from the civic standing committee to modify the Worli plant in order to make cold mix material in the city itself.

For the last few years, the BMC was importing cold mix material from Austria and Israel to fill potholes during monsoon. However, the cost of importing the material was quite high and even storage during the monsoon was proving to be a problem. In 2017, the BMC had imported 38 tonnes of cold mix material. In order to import the material, the BMC had appointed two companies, EcoGreen Infrastructure and SmartAge Products. While EcoGreen supplied Austrian-made Midas Touch, SmartAge provided Israeli-made Smart-Fill material.

Now, the BMC has handed over a five-year contract to M/s Infrasource Equipment and Material LLP for modifying the Worli plant and operating it for making the cold mix.

Vijay Singhal, additional municipal commissioner (Eastern Suburb), said that the cost of manufacturing the cold mix is lesser than importing. The cost of import of per kg of material was around Rs 177 while it can be produced locally at Rs 26 per kg on the condition that the production has to achieve economic of scale.

Meanwhile, the BMC has decided to speed up roadworks to meet the monsoon deadline of May 31. There are a total of 463 project roads where the repair before monsoon is pending. "The work roads repair and resurfacing will be taken up in summer and we expect to complete 80 per cent of the work before monsoon while only 20 per cent will remain as spillover," said a senior official from the Road Department.
