Loan waiver: Congress to launch state-wide stir

Demanding complete loan waiver for the farmers in the state, Congress state unit President Ashok Chavan on Tuesday announced that his party would launch demonstrations on July 9 and 10 in all the districts of the state to press the demand.

The announcement was made at the Congress legislature party (CLP) meeting which was held at Vidhan Bhavan in the afternoon. Senior leaders, including former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, Manikrao Thakare, Leader of Opposition in state assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, former minister Patangrao Kadam. All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge of Maharashtra Mohan Prakash also addressed the CLP meeting. Addressing a press conference at Vidhan Bhavan after the CLP meeting, Ashok Chavan said that the government was not sensitive to grave situation being faced by farmers in the state. He said that the BJP government has gone for announcements without delivering anything which has left farmers with no option but to commit suicide.

Alleging that the number of farmer suicides were rising in the state, Chavan said that the Congress does not want to politicise the issue. "We have been pursuing the demand for loan waiver for the past eight months. The Congress legislature party has decided to raise the issue on the floor of the House during the Monsoon Session of the state assembly which is commencing from July 13."

Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil said that the Fadnavis government was a government of scams and every other day new scams were coming to the fore. He alleged that in Malwani hooch tragedy, 60 people died due to negligence at the Shatabdi Hospital run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and the government should conduct a high-level inquiry into the same.

Vikhe-Patil alleged that the municipal schools in Mumbai were being closed down to convert them into Shiv Sena Shakhas. He said that he was going to raise the issue during the Monsoon Session with all details in this regard.
