LMO cracks whip on airports for using improper luggage weighing machines

According to controller of LMO Amitabh Gupta, complaints were received about the Passenger Luggage Weighing Scale at airports in the state not showing exact weight. A special campaign was organised on Wednesday at four airports in the city.

In a move that would bring joy to the airport passengers, Legal Metrology Organisation (LMO) on Wednesday carried out inspections at airports in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Aurangabad following complaints that passenger luggage weighing machines were not showing exact weight. The LMO has made out several cases in this regard.

According to controller of LMO Amitabh Gupta, complaints were received about the Passenger Luggage Weighing Scale at airports in the state not showing exact weight. A special campaign was organised on Wednesday at four airports in the city.

"During inspection we have made out total four cases regarding weighing machines out of which two cases were at Nagpur airport against Mihan India Private Limited for not re-verifying and stamping the weighing machines in due period as per the Maharashtra Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules and one case is booked for not keeping 1/10th of standard verified weights for testing of weighing machine," said Gupta.

He added, during the inspection of weighing machines used for weighing passengers checking luggage, it was noticed that totally eight machines were not in conformity. "Two weighing machines belonging to Mumbai International Airport Limited at Mumbai were issued notices for not showing exact weight. Similarly, four weighing machines belonging to Jet Airways, Air India and Indigo Airlines at Pune airport were issued notices for not showing exact weight and two weighing machines belonging to Aurangabad Airport Authority at Aurangabad Airport were issued notices for not showing exact weight. Besides this, airlines were not keeping 1/10th of weight for checking weighing scale as required as per the rules. In this regard two cases were made out," said Gupta.

"If the weighing machines are not showing proper weight then it can result in losses to the passengers as they might have to pay more. A passenger is allowed for 25 kilograms of luggage free in the flight," said an LMO official.
