Earth Hour was celebrated for the 6th year on Saturday. The event was celebrated across the city with groups organising activities to ensure greater awareness, in addition to the message of conservation.

A group known as Young Environmentalists organised a classical dance festival along with a candle-light complete with an Earth Hour cake. Elsie Gabriel, founder of the group said that the message they want to impress upon people is to save electricity and water 'not only for a day, but throughout the year'.

Elsie Gabriel has been certified by former vice president of the USA, Al Gore on climate change education, and is a Climate Reality Mentor.

Gabriel explained that power cuts are still a reality in many parts of the country, adding: "Electricity consumption in our country has been increasing due to population growth and the supply is not enough to satiate this overflowing demand."
