The State government on Monday urged the Supreme Court to lift the age limit on participating as govindas in the Dahi Handi festival, and also the height cap for celebrations in the state. The petition was filed by the Jogeshwari-based Jai Jawan Govinda Pathak. The government stated that it will suggest precautionary measures for the human tower formations.

On August 24, 2016, the SC refused a plea by the city-based Dahi Handi trust, and ordered that the human pyramid's height should not go beyond 20 feet.

Abhishek Surve, legal advisor of the Dahi Handi Utsav Samanvay Samiti (DHUSS) said, "So far it has given us a positive response, and the time to come up with precautionary measures. We are hopeful that the decision will be on our side." The apex court will further hear the case on August 1.

Bala Padalkar, president of DHUSS said, "We have noted a few suggestions for precautionary measures. We will meet on Tuesday evening to discuss them with other Pathak groups and come up with a list of final suggestions."

Currently, according to the order, young boys below the age of 18 cannot participate as govindas.
