It seems that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration has not learnt lessons from past incidents as over thousands of important documents from several departments of BMC have been stored in the changing room of the ladies washroom in the Eastern Suburb office in Pantnagar in Ghatkopar (E).

At present, the BMC's Building Maintenance Department has been carrying out the maintenance work of the seven-storey building and according to officials, the work is unlikely to complete soon.

The BMC's Eastern Suburb building houses offices of Executive Engineer (transport), Solid Waste Management, Assessment and Collection Department, Storm Water Drain and Road Department offices of the eastern suburbs. A room attached to the ladies washroom on the fourth and fifth floor, meant for changing clothes, has been used to store the documents. The documents lay covered in dust due to the ongoing work and it seems as though no one has entered the room in a long time.

According to BMC staff, the files had to be stored there as office premises lack space. The office is mainly used for tender preparation. An official said that these documents are not important and were therefore stored there.

However, in the past, there had been instances when cases of missing files have been reported. Over 9,500 files of the building Proposal Department went missing and another 7,000 files of the Water Department went missing too.

According to an official from the office, these documents will be restored in the main office after the ongoing work completes. Babasaheb Salve, Chief Engineer, Building Maintenance said, "The work will complete in the next six months."

...& ANALYSIS

  • Official documents lying inside a changing room only reflects that BMC officals lack sincerity and hasn’t learnt from past mistakes.

  • Papers being unimportant  fails as a strong case of an excuse too
